A Century of Songs
by T. Mike
This century has been pretty keen. The years 1900 to 2000- well, damn! Not only was I and everyone I know born, reared and educated in this century, it's probably the only century I'm going to live to see the end of. And not just the end of a century, but the end of a century that marks the end of a whole entire millenium. The things I've seen! The places I've been! The experiences I've experienced! To have lived now, here, at the end of an era! Only me and a scant half dozen other billion human beings can make that extraordinary claim.
This particular century of the millenium has seen the development of popular song form flourish like never before. In one short century, "pop" has mutated into so many different styles, like so many hideous deformed aborted fetuses floating eerily in jars of formaldehyde creepily drifting this way and that due to Brownian motion, it just makes you want to vomit in horror. As the pace of mutation rapidly accelerates beyond human control, I predict that in one generation, pop music will no longer be recognizable as even sound, much less music.
Until that future day, let us celebrate the twentieth century... in song! I have found a song with a year in its title for every year of this, our century. Most of course, are crappy instrumentals by bands you never heard of, but do you have any idea what a pain this project was and if you don't like it you can go lump it, buster.
Songs that are just remixes with the year added to the title were disqualified. (i.e. The Police's "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86") Year of the song's release is given if known. Preference was given to songs that did not abbreviate the year with an apostrophe (i.e. Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69"). Songs in English (my native tongue) were also given preference over songs sung in that crazy moon man language the rest of the world uses. Please feel free to email any I missed.
Hey! After I already came up with this list, Joe Mabel emails me about his page, Songs of the Century, which is very, very similiar and dammit, came out a year before my list. Go compare and contrast, why dontcha?
